This resource was designed to enhance your Math Workshop time and increase student problem-solving skills. My littles have benefited from these math tasks throughout the years and I see a huge difference in their ability to solve math problems.
What’s Included:
- Note to the Teacher (with a guide on how to use this resource)
- 20 differentiated math tasks that focus on addition/subtraction to 10, missing addends, and patterns
How I use them in my classroom:
I use these April math tasks during our guided math centers in kindergarten. First, we use a modified Kinder-friendly CUBES strategy: (circle, underline, box, evaluate, solve) kids will circle any numbers in the problem, underline the sight words they know, and box math key words or the question. We then read the problem together and evaluate what it is asking us to solve. Finally, they draw a picture to solve the problem. I give them a few minutes to draw simple pictures. We compare our answers as a small group.
We discuss our equation (including symbols and why we are adding or subtracting). This leads to some thoughtful math talk and my littles practice respectfully disagreeing and explaining their thinking. I always tell parents that our “math tasks” are completed during our small group time, so they know if their child is struggling working with me during that time, they also may need to practice these concepts at home.
Don’t forget to check out the PREVIEW by clicking the green button underneath the cover where you can see pictures of what’s included.
I’d love to see how you’re using these math tasks in your classroom! Please take pictures and tag me on social media: @kindershenanigans
